Women@WorkplacePride organized a well-attended and energizing networking event held at Workplace Pride’s new offices on December 16th. Many ideas for events for the 2017 calendar were shared, starting with a speaker event planned for March.
The next Women@WorkplacePride gathering will be on January 19th at the Workplace Pride New Year’s event. Women from Workplace Pride member companies are encouraged to attend and share their wishes for activities in 2017 and beyond. The Women@WorkplacePride steering group will meet on January 21st to turn member ideas and wishes into plans and actions for the coming year, and on March 15th the Gemeente Amsterdam will host the next speaker event.

It is with great please that Workplace Pride, Leiden University and KPN announce that Dr. Jojanneke van der Toon has been named Professor for the Workplace Pride Chair at Leiden Univerity.
This Chair, which has been under development for a number of years, is the first of its kind in the world. The Chair will provide a focused and scientific approach to improving LGBT inclusion in the workplace and will foster the development of scholarship in this priority research field both domestically and internationally. It will create a theoretical framework on which to base future studies of international LGBT workplace studies, and identify factors that influence LGBT inclusiveness in society and its dynamics.

The first Workplace Pride LGBT Business conference in Bangkok was a true milestone in the region with around 100 delegates from many different countries taking part in the event. The conference, which was a side event of the annual ILGA World Summit, took a close look at the situation for LGBT people in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) which included both business and cultural aspects.
Speakers from a number of Thai organizations representing the public, private and governmental sectors outlined the unique challenges to LGBTI inclusion in their country while noting that now is the time to start the dialogue. Their comments were supported by a report from the UNDP (United Nations Development Program) representative, Katri Kivioja who highlighted differences in perceptions and progress in a number of Asian countries regarding LGBT inclusion. Her conclusion was that there is still a great deal of work to do in the region.
Breakout sessions encouraged participants to ‘dig deeper’ into practical applications of LGBT progress and covered topics such as:
- Visibility at Work
- Employee Networks and Straight Allies
- Business Case for LGBTI Inclusion
- Making Change Last
Workplace Pride members operating in the region rallied around this initiative with representatives and support from Clifford Chance, Booking.Com, Elsevier (RELX), Shell and a number of other parties. Tony Tenicela, representing main Sponsor IBM, was a keynote speaker at the event and called for increased cooperation among all parties. Other organizations represented in the official program included the Thai Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, Orami Group, Greenpeace Thailand, Krungthai-AXA, and the World Bank. Paul Heymans, Founder of OUTBKK, which is an NGO working locally for LGBT workplace inclusion, cooperated closely with Workplace Pride in realizing the conference.
Closing the busy day was Martin van Buuren, 2nd Secretary of the Dutch Embassy in the Netherlands, which was also a strong supporter of the event.
Workplace Pride’s first foray into Asia showcased the many obstacles that still exist to LGBT workplace inclusion in the region. However, it also very effectively demonstrated that many parties from all sectors and nationalities are willing and ready to work together to create progress.

On November 14th, Booking.com hosted the Amsterdam launch of Women@WorkplacePride. In a full room with over 50 people the initiators of Workplace Pride’s program for LGBT women professionals shared their mission and launched the new identifier that will be part of the Workplace Pride overall branding. Booking.com’s LGBT network, ‘B.Proud’ also shared their best practices.
The meeting was a good example of the impact that Women@WorkplacePride aims to have: Connecting women and building a network that allows LGBT women to be visible and get empowered. At the same time, sharing experiences and speaking about content inspires people and adds value to everyone’s careers. Valuable input for next events and activities was given by participants.
“Interacting with a vast pool of professional LGBT women enables you to be the better version of yourself. And it enables you to do something for others and for the LGBT community,” said Joanna Semeniuk, one of the initiators of the Women@WorkplacePride program.
As one of Workplace Pride’s Foundation Leaders, Booking.com shared their best practices. Tassia Pellegrini gave a presentation on Booking’s diversity strategy, especially their LGBT international network and women in tech programs. B.Proud, used a Hackathon to kickstart their network. They use a new tool, Facebook’s Intranet, for enabling the LGBT community to connect in Booking offices around the world. Booking.com’s lesson was: Together, people can achieve things. “For me B.Proud shouts to everyone at Booking.com that we are open, friendly, forward thinking and our company wants to lead the way not just follow the crowd,”said one employee.
Women@WorkplacePride will continue to organize events on leadership and professional development, role models, visibility and inclusivity and building a strong LGBT women community. The next event for Workplace Pride members is an informal networking meeting at the WorkplacePride office, on the 16 th of December.

Workplace Pride Members Shell, ING, Akzo Nobel and EY took part in the “Out in the Global Economy Conference” which was held yesterday in Washington D.C. The event, which was part of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce’s Global LGBTI Business Week was hosted at the Philips Collection Museum by the the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, another Workplace Pride member. Corporate Partners are part of the Holland on the Hill group which is coordinated by the Dutch Embassy.
This event underlined the fact that international businesses operate in many different cultures and legal environments, yet are still able to make significant progress with LGBT inclusion. It was noted several that major corporations often have considerable influence in countries, often in the political as well as the economic arena. Likewise the continued commitment to LGBT inclusion was made clear, despite the current political situation in many countries, including the United States.
Workplace Pride Executive Director, David Pollard, moderated a panel entitled “The Inclusive 21st Century Economy: How Corporations, Governments and NGO’s Create Opportunities” that included among others: Genny Winter, Exec. VP IT-Trading and Supply for Shell, and Ana Carolina Oliveira, Director Credit Risk Management, ING USA. Randy Berry, Special Envoy for LGBT Human Rights from the US State Department, closed the event with words of encouragement for all stakeholders, pointing out the situation in the world is far from ‘solved'; particularly for transgender people.
“This was a great event that allowed civil society, plus the public and private sectors to engage on this topic which has become event more urgent with recent events around the world” said Pollard. “We congratulate all of them for continuing their strong and supportive policies and practices for the global LGBT community!”

Workplace Pride welcomes another, truly international, partner to it’s network of LGBT-workplace focused organizations around the world. UN-GLOBE, the LGBT employee network of the United Nations, aims to change the cultures of the organizations of the UN system so that all staff members are treated equally and inclusively regardless of their sexual or gender identities.
“The UN-GLOBE mission,” says Hyung Hak Nam (Alfonso), President of UN-GLOBE,” is to change attitudes.”
The push for change is done through concrete actions, such as calling for increased dialogue on sexual and gender identities in the workplace; seeking the support of UN senior leaders for LGBTI issues and peoples; acting as a resource network for staff and administrations; and targeting human resources policies like the ones on parental leave, which do not recognize the many different ways people start families these days.
” Many of the issues and challenges faced by LGBTI Staff in the UN Common System are the same or similar to those faced by employees of international corporations and multinationals” says Hak Nam. “UN GLOBE welcomes this collaboration with Workplace Pride Foundation as a way to share good practices and knowledge and looks forward to this partnership.”

On Thursday evening, November 3rd, the beautiful Westerkerk in Amsterdam set the scene for the 2nd Autumn Ball Gala and the presentation of the 5th Workplace Pride Leadership Awards. The black-tie event, which Workplace Pride organized together with Winq magazine, attracted a colorful crowd.
Over 300 representatives from the public and private sectors enjoyed the fine dining and great entertainment together with fashion designers, authors, T.V. and political personalities.
Cornald Maas, the host of the evening, kept the audience engaged and made sure all winners got their moment to shine with short and witty interviews. One of the highlights of the evening was Rotterdam’s Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb’s acceptance speech for winning the Winq People Award.
