On Friday, March 7th, Workplace Pride member KLM, hosted the first Connecting Networks event of 2014. Departing slightly from previous formats, this event featured a tour of hangar 11 at KLM’s home base, Schiphol airport.
The afternoon started with an introductory message by Warner van der Veer-Jehee, who outlined the role of the airline’s LGBT employee network “Over the Rainbow”.
“This type of event that brings together LGBT people from a number of organizations is good for diversity and inclusion within KLM as it demonstrates externally and internally that we are striving for an LGBT-inclusive working environment” said Veer-Jehee.
The event was one of the best attended Connecting Networks events ever, and the 30 spots available were filled within a matter of days. Participants were allowed close-up views of the larger-than-life 747s, 777s and MD11 airplanes.
The tour also took participants to the inside of the planes where they saw the new KLM business class configuration, the cockpit, and the crew’s sleeping quarters; the latter two which non-KLMers would otherwise never have access to. All participants were thrilled with this opportunity to see behind the scenes of one of Workplace Pride’s members.
